AWARDS
Tour Sarasota Architecture, the two-hour driving tour that explores Sarasota’s rich architectural legacy, received the 2010 Outstanding Preservation Education/Media award from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation.
Each year, the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation (www.floridatrust.org) recognizes significant contributions to the preservation of Florida’s historic resources through its Annual Statewide Preservation Awards Program. The Preservation Education/Media award recognizes outstanding heritage education programs, including books, brochures, curriculum, DVDs, websites, interactive media and other publications that deal with historic preservation or local history.
The Sarasota Architectural Foundation, with support from the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau (SCVB), Ringling College of Art and Design, the Gulfcoast Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Sarasota County History Center, developed the tour. A dedicated group of experts, historians and architects volunteered their time and expertise to the project. All design costs were eliminated when The Ringling College of Art and Design adopted the project as part of its Ringling College Design Center – a program where advanced students take on community design projects for school credit.
The project was a two-year effort, which was completed in the fall of 2009. Sarasota’s architecture played a key role in shaping the community. The majority of the buildings represented on the Tour celebrate a body of regional architecture called the Sarasota School of Architecture, built from 1940 - 1970. The collaborative team understood that the breadth of architecture and the connection to the Sarasota School of Architecture were incredible assets to the community, but there was no resource that enabled the public to explore and study it contextually and comprehensively. This understanding became the impetus behind the Tour.
“We are honored that the Florida Trust recognized the significance of the project and rewarded it success as not only a stellar preservation tool, but also as a shining example of how a collaboration among organizations with different resources, expertise and strengths can work to ultimately improve how we serve, promote and educate the community,” said SCVB President Virginia Haley.
Tour Sarasota is available for $10 at the SCVB Visitors Center, 701 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL.
