SAF Welcomes AIA Florida Gulf Coast and The Sarasota Design Conference

Enjoy an entertaining and informative walking tour of the Lido Shores neighborhood, a treasure-trove of Modern architecture. You'll see the exteriors of Sarasota School of Architecture residences from the 1950s to the present, illustrating the evolution of the movement over the decades. Understand "Designing for a Change" concepts such as the different architectural approaches to post 1980s FEMA regulations and the multiple ways to add onto a humble 1950s designed home. Plus, experience an exclusive tour of the interior of Paul Rudolph's Umbrella House, described as "One of the five most remarkable houses of the mid twentieth century" by Architectural Digest. You'll also view the award-winning works of architects Paul Rudolph, Edward "Tim" Seibert, Ralph and William Zimmerman, William Rupp, Don Chapell, Guy Peterson and Carl Abbott.

Guided by Dr. Christopher Wilson, Christopher Wilson teaches architecture and design history at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. He also currently serves as Board Chair of the Sarasota Architectural Foundation. Originally from Philadelphia, Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Temple University, a Master of Arts degree from The Architectural Association, London, England, and a PhD from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. Before entering the world of academia, Dr. Wilson worked as an architect in Philadelphia, Berlin, and London, and is registered with the Royal Institute of British Architects. Dr. Wilson’s most recent publication is the Sarasota chapter in a monograph on the life and work of "Sarasota School" architect Victor Lundy, to be published by Princeton Architectural Press in November 2018.
