Discover the creative world of Carl Abbott – the highly awarded Florida architect discusses his process in designing one of his exciting new projects here in Sarasota.

Carl’s designs have a timeless quality. He is strongly informed by his experiences of the sacred Architecture of the ancient Egyptians and Maya – the manner in which their designs respond to the land and to the movement of the sun and stars. He feels strongly that Architecture and Nature shape our lives.

At Yale in the ‘60s, Carl studied under Paul Rudolph then worked in the Pacific Islands and Caribbean, in New York with I.M. Pei, and in London as an original member of TEAM 4 with Norman Foster and Richard Rogers. He then opened his firm in Sarasota, becoming part of the Sarasota School of Architecture.

Abbott is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and one of the most highly awarded architects in the Florida Caribbean Region receiving the Medal of Honor for Design, the Architectural Firm
Honor Award and the greatest number of Test of Time Awards given for “buildings of enduring quality and significance”.

“Carl has a boundless enthusiasm to share his passion for Architecture.” – Lord Norman Foster

Join SAF for an exclusive house tour of the newly completed Butterfield House followed by Carl Abbott in conversation with Harold Bubil. Including a wine and cheese reception with remarks by record architect Leonardo Lunardi and contractor Pat Ball.

Carl Abbott served as the honorary chairman of the second annual SarasotaMOD architecture festival celebrating Paul Rudolph in November 2015 and is a member of the Sarasota Architectural Foundation advisory board. Visit CarlAbbott.com

Harold Bubil is the Herald-Tribune real estate editor and winner of AIA-Florida's Bob Graham Architectural Awareness Award.

Event proceeds benefit the 2016 SAF - Paul Rudolph Scholarship Fund.

The Sarasota premier of the documentary "Gray Matters" examines the life of Eileen Gray, whose work in furniture, interior design and architecture was aptly described as a "rolling experiment through the decades."

Director Marco Orsini filmed interviews with the foremost Gray scholars, museum curators and collectors and takes us on location to Paris, London, New York, Richmond, Munich, Dublin and along the French Riviera. Including stunning interior footage filmed of the newly restored Villa E-1027, the film is an historical, scholarly and cinematic investigation of the career of one of the most influential but least known modernist icons.
